The Carpathian Thriller

The Slovak National Theatre

About performance

This modern Slovak Carpathian play by Eugen Gindl is a documentary drama about the nineties converted into a piece of current political theatre. Eugen Gindl wrote the play on the basis of real events. The play reveals the corrupt practices of a global international corporation with connections in high places in the state mechanism and in financial groups and advertising machinery. In the centre of the plot featuring an unnamed company engaged in the sale of expensive medical technology that illegally obtains lucrative government contracts in many countries, including Slovakia. A former investigative journalist going by the name of Zuna now works in a small advertising agency and acquires material about the whole suspicious affair. Her attempts to reveal and investigate the illegal transactions and clientelistic links are flailing. Conversely, alone with her partner she becomes the target of blackmail and intimidation. Gindl’s provocative play demonstrates a machine mechanism of undemocratic practices in a freshly democratic society. Renowned director Roman Polák - the SND director - has created a multi-genre theatrical piece that switches theatrical forms and styles in a surprising manner. The play has an appellative, "bulgakovovsky" grotesque character. The play was named the theatre event of the year in a poll in one of the most widely read Slovak dailies –SME. The play has served to raise discussion on corruption and its consequences in Slovak society.
