About performance
The painted bird
The writer of Painted Bird part 1 – The Bastard – is New York based choreographer Pavel Zuštiak, who collaborated with New York musician and composer Christian Fredericks and Slovak dancer Jaro Viňarský. The project was tested in Poland (in the Grotowsky centre) in Slovakia (At the Žilina Záriečie station) and in New York. In addition to Jaro Viňarský a Christian Frederickson fifty local extras are featured in the performance in the crowd scene. The Bastard is the first part of the proposed The Painted Bird trilogy, a freely inspired metaphor from the well-known 1956 novel by Jerzy Kosinski which takes place during the Second World War. The main hero - a six year old boy –an orphan – roams the world. He meets a boy who makes living catching birds. The boy removes a bird from a cage and in anger paints it with piercing colours. The bird flies to its flock; the flock however rejects the bird due to its painted body and kills it. The story serves as an allegory of the writer - the performance develops themes of exile, emigration, uprooting, otherness and identity. In 2013 the play earned itself two Bessie Award nominations - Pavel Zuštiak was nominated for and Jaro Viňarský for choreography in the best dancer category. In New York Viňarský walked away with the Bessie Award – commonly referred to as the ‘Dance Oscar‘
